John 20:19–23
The disciples gathered behind locked doors because they were afraid. Jesus had died. Their future felt uncertain. Fear, confusion, and exhaustion filled the room.
And honestly, many people still live behind locked doors today — fear about health, family, finances, the future, or even speaking openly about faith.
Yet into that fearful room, the risen Christ came and spoke His first words:
“Peace be with you.” (John 20:19)

Jesus did not begin with correction or strategy. He began with peace. Before Christ sends His disciples, He restores them. Then Jesus did something remarkable: “He breathed on them and said to them, ‘Receive the Holy Spirit.’” (John 20:22)
The breath of Jesus was not only comfort — it was empowerment. The disciples were still imperfect, still fearful, and still processing everything that had happened. Yet Jesus still sent them:
“As the Father has sent me, so I send you.” (John 20:21). That is the message of Pentecost.
The Holy Spirit transformed fearful disciples into courageous witnesses. The locked room became a launching place for mission. Peace became proclamation. Breath became power.
This Sunday at Advent, Scripture was read in six different languages to reflect Acts 2, where people from many nations heard the Gospel in their own language for the first time. Pentecost reminds us that the Gospel was never meant to stay in one room, one language, or one group of people.
And sending is not the same as observing. Jesus calls the church not only to gather, but to go — to move beyond comfort zones and carry His peace, love, forgiveness, and hope into the world through words, compassion, service, generosity, and witness.
