Kept by Grace, United in Christ

Seventh Sunday of Easter — May 17, 2026
John 17:1–11

What would you pray if you knew you only had hours left before the most painful moment of your life? In John 17, Jesus answers that question. Standing on the edge of the cross, Jesus does not focus on Himself. He prays for His disciples — and for all who would follow Him.

Jesus knows His disciples are about to enter a difficult season filled with fear, uncertainty, and opposition. Yet His prayer is not for success or comfort. He prays that they would be protected, remain faithful, and stay united in God’s name.

At the center of this prayer is grace.

Jesus reminds the disciples that their relationship with God does not depend on their own strength. He has already been holding them, teaching them, protecting them, and praying for them long before they fully understood who He was. That same grace still holds us today.

We often believe faith depends on how tightly we hold on to Christ. But the good news of the Gospel is this: our hope rests in how tightly Christ holds on to us. Grace carries us when life is uncertain, forgives us when we fail, and reminds us that we are loved not because we are perfect, but because Christ is merciful.

Jesus also prays for unity: “that they may be one, as we are one” (John 17:11). In a divided world, the church becomes a witness when believers choose love over judgment, reconciliation over division, and encouragement over criticism.

This week, become a keeper of grace and a builder of unity. Extend compassion. Pray for someone difficult. Listen before judging. Be a bridge-builder in your family, workplace, and church.

Because the church is strongest when it remains united in Christ.
