Who We Are

Advent Lutheran Church LaGrange, is part of the Southeastern Synod Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.

EVANGELICAL means we share the Good News of the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ as the center of our life of faith.  The life and ministry of Jesus is told in the four Gospels: Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. Gospel means Good News and so does Evangelical.

LUTHERAN means we were established in the early 1500s when Martin Luther, an Augustinian friar, Catholic priest, and a professor at the University of Wittenberg, believed that we are saved by grace through the faith in Jesus Christ. It is not about the works we do, though they are an important way we show love for our neighbor. Our works do not guarantee our salvation but God’s love and forgiveness through the death and resurrection of Jesus do.

CHURCH means we are a Christian church in the Protestant tradition like Presbyterians, Methodists, Episcopalians, and many other denominations.  We believe that we are part of the Body of Christ, our common unity, even though some of our doctrine and worship is different.

Special Worship:  During the seasons of Advent (4 weeks before Christmas) and Lent (6 weeks before Easter) we have special, contemplative Wednesday evening worship with a light soup and sandwich meal beforehand.

Christian Education: We have confirmation for middle and high school age youth, adult Sunday School, and first communion classes.  We focus on intergenerational activities so all can be included and involved.   Bible Study Leaders are particularly dedicated and devoted to providing enthusiastic educational opportunities

Fellowship & Study: Advent Book Club, after worship fellowship, Tuesday morning Bible study, youth activities, potlucks, men’s prayer group, LaGrange College student support, and other activities are all ways we build community in our congregation. We always have room for more people to join us and add to the fun.

Outreach: In cooperation with other congregations in LaGrange we serve in ministry to our community through: Interfaith Food Closet, LaGrange Personal Aid, Phillip’s House Ministries, Hospice, Harmony House, Lutheranch, Meals on Wheels, Branches of Hope, Troup County Homeless Coalition, and disaster relief through the local disaster relief agencies and Lutheran Disaster Response

We invite you to come visit and worship with us on Sundays at 10:30 AM and we will continue to answer questions you may still have!

Peace, Advent Lutheran Church members

History

Martin Luther was born on November 10, 1483, and died on February 18, 1546.

Lutheran means we were established in the early 1500s when Martin Luther, an Augustinian friar, Catholic priest, and a professor at the University of Wittenberg, was a catalyst for the Protestant Reformation with the publishing of a list of 95 Theses – things he disagreed with in the Roman Catholic Church of his time. Luther believed that we are saved by grace through the faith in Jesus Christ. It is not about the works we do, though they are an important way we show love for our neighbor. Our works do not guarantee our salvation but God’s love and forgiveness through the death and resurrection of Jesus do.

Advent Lutheran Church was chartered in LaGrange, Georgia in 1982 after Pastor/Developer Rev. Jeffrey Lingle spent a great deal of time going door to door, choosing a site, and approving the architect’s plans for the church building.  Since then, we’ve been blessed with a diverse cast of ministers/pastors who have fed our souls with the Good News.

The Evangelical Lutheran Church in America is part of the Lutheran World Federation, one of 150 member churches with over 75.5 million people from the Lutheran tradition covering seven geographic regions (99 countries) who work together globally to promote justice, peace, reconciliation, and dignity for individuals and communities all over the world.
