Psalm 145:8–14: When God’s Character Becomes Our Hope:
How often do we answer the question, “How are you?” with a quick, “I’m fine”?
For many people, those words hide a deeper reality. Behind a smile may be worry, grief,
disappointment, loneliness, or simply the exhaustion of trying to stay strong for everyone else.
One of the greatest lessons I have learned through hospital chaplaincy is that the people who
appear the strongest are not always carrying the lightest load.
King David understood that life could be difficult. He experienced victory and failure, joy and
sorrow, trust and betrayal. Yet when he looked back over his life, he reached one remarkable
conclusion: God had always been faithful. Instead of beginning with his problems, David
began with God’s character: “The Lord is gracious and merciful, slow to anger and abounding in
steadfast love.”
That truth still speaks today.
God sees the burdens others cannot see. He notices the silent prayers, the hidden tears, and the
questions we carry in our hearts. More importantly, He does not leave us there. Through Jesus
Christ, God entered our broken world, carried our greatest burden—sin and death—and opened
the way to new life through His resurrection.
God’s compassion also calls us to action. Those whom God lifts are invited to lift others. A kind
word, a listening ear, a phone call, a visit, or a simple prayer may become God’s way of
reminding someone that they are not alone. Sometimes the greatest ministry is simply being
present.
Today, ask God to show you one person carrying an invisible burden. Then take one step to
encourage them. You may become the rainbow in someone’s clouds—a reminder that God’s hope
still shines after every storm.
Reflection
What invisible burden are you carrying today, and how might God be inviting you to place it into
His hands? Who in your life could use a simple act of compassion this week?
