Remember: Look Back to See Forward: Isaiah 51:1–6

Sometimes the best way to face what is ahead is to remember what is behind.
Through Isaiah, God speaks to people described simply as “you who seek the LORD.” They are
people like us. We seek God for many reasons for guidance, healing, wisdom, strength,
thanksgiving, or simply because we desire to know God more deeply.
And God tells those who seek him: “Look.”
“Look to the rock from which you were hewn.” Look to Abraham. Look to Sarah.
In other words: Remember.

God invites his people to remember what he has already done. Abraham and Sarah began with a
promise that seemed impossible. Yet God called. God blessed. God multiplied.
The same invitation comes to us.
Look back over your life. Perhaps God answered a prayer. Perhaps an unexpected door opened.
Perhaps God’s faithfulness came through another person someone who encouraged you, prayed
for you, believed in you, or simply stood beside you.
Only later did you realize: God was there.
This Sunday, as we witness the waters of baptism, we will see another reminder of God’s
faithfulness. Before a child can understand or explain God’s promises, God speaks a promise: “I
have called you by name, you are mine” (Isaiah 43:1).

That is why remembering matters.

We do not remember merely to celebrate yesterday. We remember yesterday so that we can
recognize who God is today and trust God with tomorrow.

Jesus Christ is “the same yesterday and today and forever” (Hebrews 13:8).

Remember what God has done. Recognize who God is. Trust God with what is ahead.
Reflection Question: When you look back over your life, where can you now recognize
God’s faithfulness, perhaps through a person, an answered prayer, an unexpected
opportunity, or a moment you did not understand at the time?
