What if your past no longer had the final word?
Many of us carry things we wish we could undo—regrets, failures, broken relationships, poor choices, or habits we cannot seem to shake. We often wonder whether people can really change, or whether we are destined to repeat the same patterns over and over again.
In Romans 6, the Apostle Paul offers a different perspective. He asks a surprising question:
“Should we continue in sin in order that grace may abound?” (Romans 6:1) His answer is simple:
“By no means!” Grace is not permission to stay the same. Grace changes everything.
Paul knew this from personal experience. Before becoming one of Christianity’s greatest missionaries, he was Saul—the persecutor of Christians. He imprisoned believers and approved of violence against the church. Then he encountered Jesus, and everything changed.
Paul discovered that through Christ, the old life no longer had to define him. Through baptism, he understood that he had died to the person he used to be and had been raised to a new life.
The same invitation is extended to us.
This does not mean life suddenly becomes easy. Temptation still comes. Old habits still whisper our names. Fear, anger, bitterness, and selfishness often try to reclaim their place in our lives. The difference is that they no longer have the final say.
Because of Christ, we are not fighting for victory; we are living from victory.
We are not called to be perfect. We are called to keep returning to Christ, seeking God’s strength, and allowing grace to shape our choices one day at a time. We do not walk this journey alone. Family, friends, and communities of faith remind us who we are when we forget.
Your past does not define you. Your failures do not own you. God’s grace gives you permission to begin again. So live with hope. Live with courage. Live with gratitude. And let others see in you the transforming power of the One who died, rose again, and lives forever.
Reflection Question
What part of your “old life” keeps trying to define you, and what would it look like to embrace the new life God is inviting you to live?
