Throughout June, Advent Lutheran Church will reflect on the theme “Grace That Changes Everything” through Paul’s Letter to the Romans. This week, Romans 4:13–25 reminds us of a powerful truth: God’s promises are fulfilled not through human effort, but through faith.
When Paul wrote to the Christians in Rome, he was speaking to people living in a culture that valued power, status, achievement, and influence. Yet instead of pointing to human success, Paul points to Abraham—an elderly man who trusted God’s promise even when it seemed impossible.

Abraham and Sarah were well beyond the years of having children. Humanly speaking, God’s promise of descendants appeared unrealistic. Yet Abraham chose faith over fear. He saw the obstacles, but he trusted that God was greater than the obstacles.
Many of us face similar challenges. We look at limited resources, unanswered prayers, uncertain futures, or personal weaknesses and wonder how God can work through them. Like Abraham, we are invited to trust God’s faithfulness rather than our circumstances.
Paul also reminds us that faith is not the absence of questions. Abraham did not know how God would fulfill His promise. He simply trusted the One who made it. Faith does not require having every answer; it requires confidence in God’s character.
Most importantly, Abraham’s story points us to Jesus Christ. The same God who fulfilled His promise to Abraham is the God who raised Jesus from the dead. Because of Christ’s death and resurrection, our relationship with God does not depend on our performance. We are saved by grace and receive that gift through faith.
This week, consider the burdens, uncertainties, or fears you carry. Instead of allowing fear to shape your decisions, let God’s promises guide your steps. Each day, pray: “Lord, I trust Your promise more than my fear.”
God kept His promise to Abraham. God fulfilled His promise in Christ. And God remains faithful today.
